Metabolic Conservation is a physiological state or adaptive mechanism where the body deliberately downregulates its basal metabolic rate and energy expenditure to preserve energy stores in response to perceived or actual caloric scarcity or chronic stress. In endocrinology, this state is often mediated by changes in key regulatory hormones, such as a reduction in active thyroid hormone (T3) and leptin levels, alongside an increase in reverse T3 and ghrelin, leading to reduced thermogenesis and enhanced energy-storage capacity. This adaptive shift, while historically protective, can contribute to weight regain and metabolic stagnation in modern contexts.
