Metabolic Comorbidities

Meaning

Metabolic Comorbidities refer to the simultaneous presence of two or more distinct pathological conditions that share common underlying metabolic and hormonal dysfunctions, such as insulin resistance, chronic low-grade inflammation, and dyslipidemia. These conditions are not independent but are etiologically linked by systemic metabolic derangement, creating a compounded risk profile for the individual. Common examples include the co-occurrence of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Addressing metabolic comorbidities requires an integrated therapeutic approach that targets the shared root mechanisms rather than treating each condition in isolation.
