Metabolic Buffer

Meaning

Metabolic Buffer describes the physiological capacity of an organism to absorb and effectively manage acute metabolic challenges, such as large nutrient loads or periods of energy deficit, without significant, sustained deviation from homeostatic balance. A robust metabolic buffer is characterized by high insulin sensitivity, efficient substrate switching, and adequate glycogen and adipose tissue storage capacity. This capacity is a key indicator of metabolic flexibility and resilience against the progression toward chronic diseases like insulin resistance.
