Metabolic Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH)

Meaning

Metabolic Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH), formerly known as Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH), is a severe form of liver disease characterized by fat accumulation in the liver (steatosis) accompanied by inflammation and hepatocyte injury. This condition is intrinsically linked to metabolic dysfunction, often occurring in individuals with insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and dyslipidemia. MASH can progress to advanced fibrosis, cirrhosis, and ultimately liver failure or hepatocellular carcinoma, representing a significant global health burden. The name change reflects a consensus to emphasize the disease’s direct connection to underlying metabolic syndrome, providing a more accurate etiological description.
