Metabolic-Associated Steatohepatitis

Meaning

Metabolic-Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH), formerly known as Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH), is a progressive, severe form of fatty liver disease characterized by the accumulation of excess fat in the liver (steatosis) accompanied by inflammation and cellular damage (hepatitis). This condition is intrinsically linked to systemic metabolic dysfunction, including insulin resistance, obesity, and dyslipidemia, making it a critical manifestation of underlying hormonal imbalance. MASH can progress to liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and liver failure, highlighting the severe consequences of chronic metabolic and endocrine dysregulation on organ health. Early identification and aggressive management of the associated metabolic risk factors are paramount.
