Metabolic Acidosis

Meaning

Metabolic acidosis is a critical clinical condition characterized by an abnormal decrease in the body’s systemic pH, typically below 7.35, resulting from either an accumulation of non-carbonic acids or an excessive loss of bicarbonate from the extracellular fluid. This imbalance disrupts the delicate physiological equilibrium, significantly impacting enzyme function and cellular processes throughout the body. While not primarily an endocrine disorder, it can be a severe complication of endocrine conditions such as diabetic ketoacidosis, demanding immediate clinical intervention to restore acid-base balance.
