Meta-Inflammation

Meaning

Meta-inflammation refers to a chronic, low-grade systemic inflammatory state primarily driven by metabolic dysregulation rather than infection. This distinct form of inflammation is characterized by persistent activation of innate immune pathways within metabolically active tissues, particularly adipose tissue, liver, and muscle. It represents a subtle yet continuous immune response to nutrient excess and cellular stress, differing significantly from the acute, localized inflammation associated with injury or pathogen invasion.
