Mesangial Cells

Meaning

Mesangial Cells are specialized, modified smooth muscle cells situated within the mesangium, the central stalk of the kidney’s glomerulus, which serves as the primary filtration unit. These cells are essential for maintaining the structural integrity of the glomerular capillaries and regulating the filtration process. Their dysfunction is a pathological hallmark of several progressive kidney diseases, notably diabetic nephropathy, which is intrinsically linked to hormonal and metabolic derangements.
