Menopausal Vasomotor Symptoms

Meaning

Menopausal vasomotor symptoms (VMS) are the acute, transient episodes of intense heat, sweating, and flushing, commonly known as hot flashes or night sweats, that represent the most prevalent and disruptive manifestations of the menopausal transition. These symptoms arise from a physiological instability in the body’s thermoregulatory center, the hypothalamus, triggered by the withdrawal of ovarian estrogen. VMS can significantly impair quality of life, sleep architecture, and overall well-being, often requiring clinical management.
