Menopausal Bone Loss

Meaning

Menopausal bone loss is the accelerated decline in bone mineral density (BMD) and subsequent deterioration of bone microarchitecture that occurs in women following the cessation of ovarian estrogen production, typically during the perimenopausal and postmenopausal transition. This physiological event significantly increases skeletal fragility and the lifetime risk of developing osteoporosis and fragility fractures. It is a direct consequence of estrogen withdrawal on the skeletal remodeling unit.
