Mendelian Randomization

Meaning

Mendelian Randomization (MR) is an advanced epidemiological research method that utilizes genetic variants, typically Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs), as instrumental variables to assess the causal relationship between a modifiable risk factor and a disease outcome. By leveraging the random assortment of genetic alleles during meiosis, which mimics the randomization in a clinical trial, MR helps to overcome the significant limitations of conventional observational studies, such as confounding and reverse causation. This technique provides a powerful, robust method for inferring causality in the complex interplay between hormonal markers, metabolic traits, and chronic disease risk in human populations.
