Membrane Receptors

Meaning

Membrane Receptors are integral protein structures embedded within the plasma membrane of a cell that function as binding sites for extracellular signaling molecules, such as peptide hormones, neurotransmitters, and growth factors. These receptors are crucial for intercellular communication, as they receive signals that cannot cross the lipid bilayer. Their primary role is to convert an external chemical message into an internal cellular response through a process called signal transduction.
