Melatonin Suppression

Meaning

Melatonin suppression is the physiological phenomenon where the synthesis and secretion of the hormone melatonin by the pineal gland are inhibited, most notably by exposure to short-wavelength visible light, particularly blue light. This acute reduction in circulating melatonin levels disrupts the body’s internal circadian rhythm and signaling related to the sleep-wake cycle. Chronic suppression can negatively impact sleep quality, metabolic function, and antioxidant capacity.
