Melanotan I

Meaning

Melanotan I, also known clinically as Afamelanotide, is a synthetic peptide analog of the naturally occurring alpha-Melanocyte-Stimulating Hormone (α-MSH). This peptide is designed to selectively activate the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R), which is primarily responsible for stimulating melanogenesis, the process of producing the protective pigment melanin in the skin. Its therapeutic application centers on increasing photoprotection in individuals with specific light-sensitive skin disorders by promoting a deep, natural tan. Melanotan I represents a targeted approach to skin health that leverages the body’s innate endocrine pathways for pigmentation.
