Melanocyte Stimulation

Meaning

Melanocyte stimulation is the physiological process of activating melanocytes, the pigment-producing cells located in the basal layer of the epidermis, to increase the synthesis and distribution of melanin. This activation is primarily regulated by the melanocortin system, often in response to ultraviolet radiation exposure or specific hormonal signals. Clinically, it is the fundamental mechanism underlying tanning and is also relevant in managing pigmentation disorders.
