Melanocortin Receptors

Meaning

Melanocortin Receptors, designated MC1R through MC5R, are a family of G-protein coupled receptors that bind to the melanocortin peptides, which are derived from the precursor protein pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC). These receptors are distributed throughout the body and are critical mediators of a diverse array of physiological functions, including pigmentation, energy homeostasis, appetite regulation, sexual function, and inflammation. The specific receptor subtype dictates the biological response to the binding melanocortin peptide, highlighting their pleiotropic effects.
