Melanocortin 1 Receptor

Meaning

The Melanocortin 1 Receptor (MC1R) is a G-protein coupled receptor primarily expressed on the surface of melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing the pigment melanin. This receptor plays a central role in determining human skin and hair color, as its activation by alpha-Melanocyte-Stimulating Hormone (α-MSH) promotes the synthesis of the darker, protective eumelanin pigment. Genetic variations in the MC1R gene are the main cause of red hair and fair skin phenotypes, highlighting its critical function in photoprotection.
