Melancortin Receptors

Meaning

Melanocortin Receptors (MCRs) are a family of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) found throughout the body, particularly in the central nervous system and peripheral tissues, that mediate the diverse physiological effects of melanocortin peptides, such as alpha-Melanocyte-Stimulating Hormone (α-MSH) and Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH). These receptors play a crucial role in regulating energy homeostasis, appetite, sexual function, pigmentation, and the body’s inflammatory response. Their function links the neuroendocrine system directly to metabolic and immune regulation.
