Meiosis

Meaning

Meiosis is a highly specialized type of cell division that is absolutely essential for sexual reproduction, resulting in the formation of four genetically distinct daughter cells, each containing exactly half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell, known as haploid cells. This two-step process involves two consecutive rounds of cell division following only a single round of DNA replication, critically ensuring profound genetic diversity through the strategic recombination of genetic material. In human biology, meiosis is the precise mechanism by which all gametes, specifically sperm in males and ova in females, are produced, thereby ensuring the correct chromosome number is maintained across successive generations.
