Megalin

Meaning

Megalin, also known as LRP2, is a large, multi-ligand endocytic receptor protein expressed on the surface of various epithelial cells, most notably in the renal proximal tubules and the thyroid follicular cells. Its primary physiological role is to bind and internalize a diverse array of molecules from the extracellular fluid, including vitamins, hormones, and their carrier proteins. This receptor is critical for maintaining systemic homeostasis and preventing the urinary loss of essential micronutrients and endocrine factors. Its function is vital for nutrient and hormone recycling.
