Medullary Thyroid Cancer

Meaning

Medullary Thyroid Cancer (MTC) is a distinct and relatively rare form of thyroid malignancy that uniquely originates from the parafollicular C cells of the thyroid gland, which are the cells physiologically responsible for producing the hormone calcitonin. Unlike the more prevalent papillary and follicular thyroid cancers, MTC is reliably characterized by significantly elevated circulating levels of calcitonin and can occur either sporadically or as a component of inherited syndromes, most notably Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2). Early detection and precise, longitudinal monitoring of the hormonal biomarkers calcitonin and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) are absolutely crucial for both diagnosis and the effective management of this potentially aggressive neuroendocrine tumor.
