Medicalization of Aging

Meaning

The Medicalization of Aging describes the socio-clinical process by which the normal, non-pathological physiological changes and declines associated with advancing age are increasingly redefined, framed, and treated as medical diseases or conditions requiring therapeutic intervention. This perspective shifts the focus from the acceptance of natural biological decline to the active pursuit of pharmacological or hormonal solutions to restore youthful biomarkers and functions. It raises important ethical and clinical questions regarding the demarcation between the natural aging process and genuine pathology.
