Medical Menopause

Meaning

Medical Menopause, often referred to as induced or iatrogenic menopause, is the abrupt and complete cessation of ovarian function and the resulting reproductive hormone deficiency caused by a medical intervention rather than the natural aging process. This state is commonly triggered by bilateral oophorectomy, which is the surgical removal of both ovaries, or by therapeutic modalities like chemotherapy, radiation, or the use of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists. The sudden, non-physiological withdrawal of estrogen and progesterone often precipitates more severe and immediate menopausal symptoms than those experienced during natural transition.
