Medical Castration

Meaning

A clinical state achieved through pharmacological intervention that results in the suppression of gonadal hormone production, typically testosterone in men or estrogen in women, to levels comparable to surgical removal of the gonads. This is most commonly achieved using Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) agonists or antagonists, which inhibit the pituitary-gonadal axis. Medical castration is a therapeutic strategy primarily employed in the management of hormone-sensitive cancers, such as advanced prostate cancer or certain breast cancers.
