Median Preoptic Nucleus

Meaning

The Median Preoptic Nucleus (MnPO) is a small but functionally critical cluster of neurons situated in the anterior hypothalamus of the brain. This nucleus acts as a major central integrator of autonomic and endocrine functions, playing a pivotal role in regulating thirst, sleep, and, most notably, body temperature homeostasis. Its clinical relevance in hormonal health is highlighted by its involvement in mediating the destabilization of the thermoregulatory setpoint that causes menopausal hot flashes.
