MC1R

Meaning

MC1R, or Melanocortin 1 Receptor, is a crucial G protein-coupled receptor primarily expressed on melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing pigment in the skin and hair. This receptor plays a central role in regulating human pigmentation by controlling the type of melanin produced, specifically shifting production from the red/yellow pheomelanin to the protective black/brown eumelanin. Beyond pigmentation, MC1R signaling is also implicated in anti-inflammatory responses and DNA repair mechanisms, highlighting its broader role in cellular protection and cutaneous health. Genetic variants in the MC1R gene are responsible for red hair, fair skin, and increased susceptibility to UV damage.
