Master Chemical Clock

Meaning

A metaphorical but clinically relevant term referring to the complex, synchronized network of biochemical oscillators and gene expression cycles, primarily orchestrated by the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in the hypothalamus, that regulates nearly all physiological functions on a 24-hour, or circadian, rhythm. This clock dictates the precise timing of hormone release, metabolic rate, body temperature, and the sleep-wake cycle. Its accurate function is essential for systemic homeostasis.
