Mast Cells

Meaning

Resident tissue cells of the immune system that play a central role in inflammatory and allergic responses by serving as sentinel cells in mucosal and epithelial tissues. These cells are characterized by their large granules, which contain potent pro-inflammatory mediators, including histamine, heparin, and various cytokines. Mast cells are critical components of the body’s immediate defense against pathogens and toxins.
