Mammary Tissue

Meaning

Mammary tissue, clinically referred to as the breast parenchyma, is the glandular and supportive tissue located in the chest region, primarily responsible for lactation in females. This tissue is highly sensitive to and regulated by fluctuating levels of steroid hormones, notably estrogen, progesterone, and prolactin, throughout the lifespan. Understanding the hormonal dynamics within this tissue is paramount in both reproductive health and the surveillance of proliferative disorders. In males, the presence of excessive glandular tissue, known as gynecomastia, is often a sign of underlying hormonal imbalance.
