Mammary Stem Cells

Meaning

Mammary stem cells are a rare, self-renewing population of undifferentiated cells residing within the mammary tissue that possess the unique capacity to generate all the differentiated cell types of the adult mammary gland, including the ductal and alveolar structures. These cells are fundamentally responsible for the extensive growth, development, and remodeling of the breast tissue that occurs throughout puberty, pregnancy, and the menstrual cycle, all under tight hormonal control. Their function is crucial for lactation and tissue maintenance. Aberrant regulation of these cells is a focus of breast cancer research.
