Male HPG Axis Suppression

Meaning

Male HPG Axis Suppression refers to the clinical state where the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal (HPG) axis, the central hormonal regulatory system for male reproductive function, experiences a significant reduction in its activity. This suppression results in decreased secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus, luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) from the pituitary, and consequently, diminished endogenous testosterone production by the testes. This state is a common consequence of exogenous hormone administration, chronic illness, or certain pharmaceutical interventions, leading to secondary hypogonadism.
