Maculopathy

Meaning

Maculopathy is a general term encompassing any pathological condition or disease process that specifically affects the macula, the small, central area of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed central vision. These progressive disorders typically lead to impaired visual acuity and central blind spots, severely impacting a person’s ability to read or recognize faces. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) represents the most prevalent form of this condition.
