Macular Edema

Meaning

Macular Edema is a clinical condition characterized by the abnormal accumulation of fluid and swelling in the macula, the small central area of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed central vision. This fluid accumulation disrupts the normal architecture of the macula, leading to blurred or distorted vision, and is a significant cause of vision loss. It is a common complication of conditions like diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, and certain pharmacological therapies, including some hormonal agents.
