Macrophage Foam Cells

Meaning

Macrophage Foam Cells are lipid-laden macrophages found within the subendothelial space of arterial walls, characterized by a cytoplasm filled with excessive internalized cholesterol and fatty acids, giving them a foamy appearance. These cells are a hallmark pathological feature of early-stage atherosclerosis and are central to the inflammatory cascade that leads to plaque formation and hardening of the arteries. Their presence signals a failure in lipid clearance and chronic vascular inflammation.
