M1 Macrophage

Meaning

The M1 Macrophage represents a classically activated phenotype of the large white blood cells known as macrophages, which are central to the innate immune system. These cells are characterized by their pro-inflammatory function, primarily responsible for pathogen clearance, tissue damage, and the production of inflammatory cytokines like TNF-alpha and IL-6. In the context of hormonal health, an overabundance of M1 macrophages is indicative of chronic, low-grade systemic inflammation, which can impair insulin signaling and endocrine function.
