Lymphedema

Meaning

Lymphedema is a chronic, progressive medical condition characterized by the localized accumulation of protein-rich interstitial fluid, typically in the limbs, resulting from a compromised or obstructed lymphatic drainage system. This failure of fluid transport leads to persistent tissue swelling, fibrosis, skin changes, and an increased susceptibility to local infections like cellulitis. It is a clinical manifestation of lymphatic insufficiency, which can be primary (genetic) or secondary (acquired).
