Lymphatic System Failure

Meaning

Lymphatic system failure, also known as lymphedema, is a clinical condition characterized by the impaired function of the lymphatic system, leading to the accumulation of protein-rich fluid in the interstitial tissues. This failure results from either congenital malformation (primary lymphedema) or damage to the lymphatic vessels or nodes (secondary lymphedema), often due to surgery, radiation, or chronic infection. Unlike simple edema, this failure results in a progressive, non-pitting swelling that can cause tissue fibrosis and significantly impair limb function and quality of life. The condition requires specialized clinical management to prevent complications.
