Lux Intensity Measurement

Meaning

Lux Intensity Measurement is the clinical practice of quantifying the illuminance, or the total amount of visible light falling on a surface, in units of lux (lumens per square meter). This measurement is a critical, objective tool in chronobiology and sleep medicine for assessing the true light environment, which is the primary external regulator of the circadian rhythm. Clinicians use lux readings to precisely determine if a patient’s daytime light exposure is sufficient for proper circadian entrainment or if their evening light exposure is excessive and suppressive to melatonin secretion. It provides the necessary data to implement effective Light Hygiene Strategies.
