Luteinizing Hormone-Releasing Hormone Agonists

Meaning

A class of synthetic peptide drugs that bind to and initially stimulate the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptors in the anterior pituitary gland, followed by a sustained desensitization and down-regulation of these receptors. This biphasic action ultimately leads to a profound, reversible suppression of pituitary gonadotropin secretion, specifically Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH), thereby suppressing gonadal steroid production. These agents are clinically utilized to manage hormone-sensitive conditions, such as prostate cancer or endometriosis.
