Luteinizing Hormone-Releasing Hormone Agonists

Meaning

Luteinizing Hormone-Releasing Hormone Agonists, often abbreviated as LHRH agonists, are synthetic compounds designed to mimic the action of the naturally occurring gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), also known as LHRH. Initially, these agents transiently stimulate the pituitary gland, leading to a brief surge in gonadotropin release. However, with continuous administration, they induce a desensitization and downregulation of the pituitary GnRH receptors, effectively suppressing the release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).
