Luteal Phase Deficiency

Meaning

Luteal Phase Deficiency (LPD) is a specific diagnosis in reproductive endocrinology characterized by the inadequate function of the corpus luteum, resulting in insufficient secretion of progesterone during the second half of the menstrual cycle. This hormonal insufficiency impairs the necessary preparation and maturation of the uterine lining (endometrium) for implantation. LPD is a recognized cause of recurrent early miscarriage and certain types of infertility.
