Lumbar Spine BMD

Meaning

Lumbar Spine BMD is a quantitative clinical measurement representing the Bone Mineral Density of the vertebral bodies in the lower (lumbar) section of the spine. This specific measurement, typically obtained via Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA), is a critical diagnostic indicator for assessing skeletal strength, monitoring the progression of osteopenia or osteoporosis, and evaluating fracture risk. Optimal BMD is fundamentally dependent on a balanced hormonal milieu, particularly adequate levels of estrogen, testosterone, and Vitamin D.
