Lp-PLA2

Meaning

Lp-PLA2, or lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2, is an enzyme primarily associated with low-density lipoprotein particles in the bloodstream. It specifically hydrolyzes oxidized phospholipids, which are key components of oxidized LDL. This enzymatic activity yields lysophosphatidylcholine and oxidized fatty acids, both of which are biologically active signaling molecules. The presence and activity of this enzyme often signal ongoing inflammatory processes within the vascular system.
