LOX-1 Receptor

Meaning

The LOX-1 Receptor, or Lectin-like Oxidized Low-Density Lipoprotein Receptor-1, is a specialized scavenger receptor protein expressed primarily on the surface of endothelial cells, macrophages, and smooth muscle cells. Its clinical significance lies in its role as the major receptor responsible for the binding and uptake of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL), a key initiator of vascular damage and atherosclerotic plaque formation. The expression of this receptor is often dramatically upregulated in pro-atherogenic conditions such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes.
