Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms

Meaning

Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS) is a collective term describing a range of bothersome symptoms related to the storage or voiding phases of the urinary cycle, originating from the bladder, prostate, or urethra. Storage symptoms include frequency, urgency, and nocturia, while voiding symptoms involve hesitancy, poor stream, and incomplete emptying. LUTS are highly prevalent, particularly in aging populations, and are significantly influenced by sex steroid hormones in both men and women. In males, LUTS are often associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
