Low T3 Syndrome

Meaning

Low T3 Syndrome, also known as Euthyroid Sick Syndrome or Non-Thyroidal Illness Syndrome (NTIS), is a clinical condition characterized by abnormal peripheral thyroid hormone levels, specifically low triiodothyronine (T3) and often elevated reverse T3 (rT3), occurring in the setting of non-thyroidal acute or chronic illness. Crucially, patients are clinically euthyroid, meaning their thyroid gland itself is functioning normally, and the pituitary TSH level is typically normal or mildly suppressed. This state is considered a metabolic adaptation to conserve energy during systemic stress.
