Low-Frequency Stressors

Meaning

Low-frequency stressors are chronic, often subtle, and persistent physiological or psychological challenges that are encountered over extended periods, typically on a daily or weekly basis, without adequate recovery. Unlike acute, high-impact events, these stressors include factors such as chronic sleep deprivation, low-grade inflammatory states, prolonged social isolation, or continuous low-level cognitive demands. Although individually mild, the cumulative effect of these low-frequency stressors can lead to chronic activation of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis, resulting in persistent cortisol elevation and eventual endocrine dysregulation. Addressing these subtle, ongoing pressures is fundamental to restoring hormonal balance.
