Low-FODMAP

Meaning

The Low-FODMAP diet is a clinically validated elimination diet that restricts the intake of Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, and Polyols. These are poorly absorbed, short-chain carbohydrates that are highly osmotic and rapidly fermented by gut bacteria. The diet is primarily used as a therapeutic intervention for patients suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and other functional gastrointestinal disorders. It is a structured, temporary approach, emphasizing a reintroduction phase to identify specific food triggers.
