Low Estrogen

Meaning

Low estrogen, clinically termed hypoestrogenism, is a state characterized by circulating levels of the primary female sex hormones, estradiol and estrone, that fall below the optimal physiological reference range for a given age and reproductive status. This hormonal deficiency is a common clinical finding in conditions like menopause, premature ovarian insufficiency, and functional hypothalamic amenorrhea, profoundly impacting systemic function. Insufficient estrogen is associated with a spectrum of symptoms, including vasomotor instability, genitourinary syndrome of menopause, and an increased risk of long-term sequelae like osteoporosis and cardiovascular changes. Recognizing and addressing this deficit is crucial for longevity and quality of life.
