Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol

Meaning

A specific type of lipoprotein particle responsible for transporting cholesterol from the liver and intestines to peripheral tissues, commonly referred to as “bad cholesterol” when present in excess due to its association with atherogenesis. While primarily a cardiovascular marker, its synthesis and regulation are intrinsically linked to steroid hormone production, as cholesterol is the precursor for all steroid hormones. Maintaining appropriate levels is vital for overall metabolic health.
