Long-Acting Esters

Meaning

Long-acting esters are modified steroid hormones, such as testosterone or estradiol, chemically altered by the addition of an ester group at a specific position, typically the 17-beta hydroxyl group. This esterification increases the molecule’s lipophilicity, which allows for its dissolution in an oil vehicle and subsequent slow release from the injection site into the systemic circulation, thereby extending its half-life and duration of action significantly compared to the unmodified parent hormone.
